Public Education

Within Concord there are one public integrated preschool, three public elementary schools, one public middle school, and one regional public high school shared with the neighboring town of Carlisle. Concord is a member of the Minuteman Regional School District, which runs a vocational technical school, with a newly rebuilt campus located in neighboring Lexington.

Concord Middle School (CMS) is a 6-8 middle level school comprised of two buildings: the Sanborn building and the Peabody building, which are less than one mile apart. The middle school model combines both a Department and House structure in order to maximize both content expertise and support the student as a whole child. The middle school curriculum covers language arts, math, science and social studies, as well as art, physical education, foreign language, and library learning. School hours slightly different at each building.

Transportation

DRIVING ACCESSIBILITY
Concord is located 20 miles northwest of Boston. Under light traffic conditions, the commute is approximately 40 minutes into Boston with three major commuter routes: Route 2, Interstate 95 / Route128, and Interstate 495. Read more about major driving routes here.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
The MBTA Fitchburg Commuter Rail runs to/from North Station in downtown Boston and has two stops in Concord: one at the Concord Depot and one in West Concord. It is about a 40 minute ride between the Concord Depot and North Station, and 30 minutes between Concord and Porter Square, where the train connects to the MBTA Red Line, which runs with multiple stops through Cambridge into Boston.

The Yankee Bus Line provides commuter service between Acton, MA and Copley Square in Boston with a stop in Concord at Crosby’s supermarket. The service runs two inbound trips in the morning and two outbound trips in the afternoon.

Parks & Recreation

Walden Pond was once home to the renowned author, Henry David Thoreau. Now part of the Massachusetts Forests and Parks system, Walden Pond State Reservation includes 462 acres of protected open space for hiking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and cross country skiing. Year round interpretive programs and guided walks are offered, as well as a gift shop, bookstore, and the Tsongas gallery.

Minuteman National Park extends through Lexington, Lincoln, and Concord. It contains numerous historical sites from the opening battle of the Revolution, including the Old North Bridge, Wayside and The Battle Road Trail, which extends 5 miles from Meriam’s Corner in Concord to the Eastern boundary of the park in Lexington. The Parks offer a wide range of special events as well as guided tours.

Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is one of more than 560 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Covering 253 acres on the banks of the Concord River, it is considered one of the best inland birding sites in Massachusetts by noted ornithologists. Within the refuge, there are 2.7 miles of trails, including the Dike, Timber, Edge, and Black Duck Creek trails, where wildlife may be observed.

Great Brook Farm State Park is a 1000-acre park featuring more than 20 miles of trails, as well as open meadows and scenic ponds for hiking, picnicking, canoeing, fishing and cross-country skiing. One can see notable Native American sites and 17th-century cellar holes left over from English settlers. There’s also an active dairy farm that offers free tours on weekends and seasonal ice cream.

South Bridge Boat House is a family-run business offers canoe and kayak rentals with direct access to 18 miles of the Concord River and is within easy paddling distance of the Sudbury River, Assabet River, and the Old North Bridge.

The Concord Recreation Department (the Rec) supports and promotes community through wellness and play. With two facilities, Hunt Recreation Center & Emerson Playground and Beede Swim & Fitness Center, the Rec offers a full range of programs including the After School Program, Before School Program, Concord Carousel PreSchool, the Summer Day Camp, Youth and Adult Sports, Fitness Classes, and Aquatics, among others. A full program guide is produced twice a year, with the Fall/Winter brochure coming out in early to mid August and the Spring/Summer version arriving in mid February.

Library, Museum & Arts

Founded in 1873 through the generosity and vision of Concord native, William Munroe, the mission of the Concord Free Public Library is to inspire lifelong learning and to actively promote personal enrichment by connecting community members to information, ideas, culture, unique historical resources, and each other in a tradition of innovation and excellence. Most recently renovated from 2003-2005, the Concord Free Public Library offers a wide range of services including museum passes, interlibrary loans, meeting rooms, homebound services, and access to technology. Ongoing programs run through the library include: ARtSplorers, Storytime, Homework Help for Kids, Homework Help for Teens, Girls Who Code, and Fun Fridays.

The Umbrella Community Arts Center offers arts education programs, performing and visual arts presentations, and community collaborations out of the town’s first steel-beamed structure. Built as a high school in 1929, Emerson School has long been an important architectural landmark in downtown Concord. Today, through its programming, the Umbrella continues to inspire creativity, learning, and personal growth. It offers studio space for more than 50 artists, a variety of classes and workshops for children and adults in four large teaching studios, exhibition space in the Gallery, community arts initiatives, and performance space for all disciplines in two theaters—a newly constructed 344-seat main stage theater and 100-seat black box theater—as well as a new dance studio classroom.

Founded in 2005, the Concord Conservatory of Music (CCM) is a non-profit school, serving Concord and 15 surrounding communities. CCM offers an array of private lessons and group classes to kids, teens, and adults, as well as various ensemble groups, jazz combos, a rock lab, composition classes and more. CCM also runs community events and workshops throughout the year.

The Concord Museum houses one of the oldest and most treasured collections of Americana in the country, featuring a renowned historical collection, American literary treasures, and a nationally-significant collection of Concord clocks, silver, and furniture in self-touring galleries.

Verrill Farm is a 200-acre family-owned farm in Concord and Sudbury that is committed to sustainable farming practices from soil improvement to the support of community life.
